משנה: רְחָבָה לְקַבֵּל אָרִיחַ וּבְרִיאָה לְקַבֵּל אָרִיחַ. רִבִּי יְהוּדָה אוֹמֵר רְחָבָה אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁאֵינָהּ בְּרִיאָה:
MISHNAH: Wide enough to carry a tile and strong enough to carry a tile. Rebbi Jehudah says, wide enough even if not strong enough.
הלכה: רְחָבָה לְקַבֵּל אָרִיחַ כול׳. תַּנֵּי. רִבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אוֹמֵר. בְּרִיָיה אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁאֵינָהּ רְחָבָה. רַב הוּנָא בְשֵׁם רַב. הֲלָכָה כְרִבִּי מֵאִיר. שְׁמוּאֵל אָמַר. הֲלָכָה כְרִבִּי יוּדָה. רִבִּי יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בֶּן לֵוִי אָמַר. הֲלָכָה כְרִבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן. אָמַר רִבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בַּר כַּרְסָנָא. מְכֵּיוָן דְּתֵימַר. הֲלָכָה כְהָדֵין וַהֲלָכָה כְהָדֵין. מָאן דַּעֲבַד הָכֵין לָא חֲשַׁשׁ וּמָאן דַּעֲבַד הָכֵין לָא חֲשַׁשׁ. אָמַר רִבִּי מָנָא. מִכֵּיוָן דְּאִיתְמַר הֲלָכָה כְרַבָּנִן. שָׁבְקִין לְיָחִיד וְעָבְדִין כְרַבָּנִן.
HALAKHAH: “Wide enough to carry a tile,” etc. It was stated: Rebbi Simeon says, strong even if it is not wide. Rav Huna in the name of Rav: Practice follows Rebbi Meïr. Samuel said, practice follows Rebbi Jehudah. Rebbi Joshua ben Levi said, practice follows Rebbi Simeon. Rebbi Simeon bar Carsana said, since you are saying that practice follows this one and that one, one may follow this one or that one without worry. Rebbi Mana said, since it was said that practice follows the rabbis, one disregards individuals and acts following the rabbis.
רַב אֲזַל לְחַד אֲתַר. חֲמָא חַד מָבוֹי שְׁרִיתֵיהּ בְלֶיחַיָּא. יְהַב לָהּ בְּחוּטְרָא וְאַפְלָהּ. אֲמַר לֵיהּ רַב חוּנָא. דִּיקְלָא קָאִים. אֲמַר לֵיהּ רַב. עֵינוֹי דְרַב חוּנָא גְבַהּ. וְעֵינוֹי דְרַב לֵית אִינּוּן גְּבַהּ. אֶלָּא הַרֵינִי אוֹסֵר לָהֶן מִשֵׁם קוֹרָה. וּלְשַׁבָּת הַבָּאָה אֲנִי מַתִּיר לָהֶן מִשּׁוּם לֶחִי. שֶׁיִהְיוּ יוֹדְעִין שֶׁאִם יִנָּטֵל הַדֶּקֶל שֶׁהוּא אָסוּר לְטַלְטֵל. וְאִית בָּעֵי מֵימַר. דְּלָא יְהַוּוּן סָבְרִין כְּרִבִּי יוּדָה. דְּרִבִּי יוּדָה אֲמַר. רְחָבָה אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁאֵינָהּ בְּרִיָיה.
Rav went to a certain place; he saw a certain alley, he understood that [the beam] was [rotten], he hit it with a stick and felled it. Rav Ḥuna said to him, the date palm stands. Rav told him, the eyes of Rav Ḥuna are high, the eyes of Rav are not high; but I am forbidding it for them because of a beam and the next Sabbath I am permitting it to them because of a lath, that they should know that if the palm tree were removed they would be forbidden to carry. Some want to say, that they should not think following Rebbi Jehudah, as Rebbi Jehudah said, “wide enough even if not strong enough.”
דְּרִבִּי חִינְנָא לֹא אָמַר כֵּן. אֶלָּא רַב אֲזַל לְחַד אֲתַר. חֲמָה חַד מָבוֹי שֶׁנִּיטַּל קוֹרָתוֹ וְאָסַר לָהּ. אֲמַר לֵיהּ רַב חוּנָה. דִּיקְלָא קָאִים. אֲמַר לֵיהּ רַב. עֵינוֹי דְרַב חוּנָא גְבַהּ. וְעֵינוֹי דְרַב לֵית אִינּוּן גְּבַהּ. אֶלָּא הַרֵינִי אוֹסֵר לָהֶן מִשׁוּם קוֹרָה. וּלְשַׁבָּת הַבָּאָה אֲנִי מַתִּיר לָהֶן מִשּׁוּם לֶחִי. שֶׁיִהְיוּ יוֹדְעִין שֶׁאִם יִינָּטֵל הַדֶּקֶל שֶׁהוּא אָסוּר לְטַלְטֵל. אִית דְּבָעֵי מֵימַר. דְּלָא יְהַוּוּן סָבְרִין כְּרִבִּי יוּדָה. דְּתַנִּינָן תַּמָּן. אֵיזֶהוּ קַרְפֵּף. כָּל שֶׁהוּא סָמוּךְ לָעִיר. דִּבְרֵי רַבִּי יְהוּדָה. וְהָכָא הוּא אוֹמֵר אָכֵן. אָמַר רִבִּי מָנָא. כְּבֵית דִּירָה עֲבַד לָהּ רִבִּי יוּדָה.
Rebbi Ḥinena did not say so but: Rav went to a certain place; he saw a certain alley whose beam had been removed, and forbade it. Rav Ḥuna said to him, the date palm stands. Rav told him, the eyes of Rav Ḥuna are high, the eyes of Rav are not high; but I am forbidding it for them because of a beam, and the next Sabbath I am permitting it to them because of a lath, that they should know that if the palm tree were removed they would be forbidden to carry. Some want to say, that they should not think following Rebbi Jehudah, as we have stated there, “what is a corral? Anything close to a village, the words of Rebbi Jehudah.” And here he says so? Rebbi Mana said, Rebbi Jehudah treated it as a house.
