Regina Jonas studied at Berlin's liberal rabbinical academy and argued in her thesis that Jewish law does not bar a woman from the rabbinate, but the academy did not ordain her. In 1935 Rabbi Max Dienemann examined and ordained her, and she taught, preached and gave pastoral care in Berlin as Nazi persecution tightened. Deported to Theresienstadt in November 1942, she went on working as a rabbi in the ghetto until she was sent to Auschwitz and murdered in 1944.
