Zhu Xi reworked Confucian teaching around 'principle' (lǐ) and 'vital force' (qì) and made four short texts, the Analects, Mencius, Great Learning and Doctrine of the Mean, the core of learning. From the early fourteenth century, under the Yuan, his commentaries were the set reading for the civil service examinations, which lasted until 1905, and his school shaped Korea and Japan as well.
