Troubled by contradictions in the Chinese scriptures, the monk Xuanzang slipped out of China without permission in 629 (some sources say 627), crossed the deserts and mountains of Central Asia, and studied for years at Nālandā, India's great monastic university. He came home to Chang'an in 645 with hundreds of texts and spent the rest of his life translating them.
