Tradition holds that the Qur'an was first gathered into a single written copy soon after Muhammad's death, under Abū Bakr or ʿUmar, by his scribe Zayd ibn Thābit. Around 650 Caliph ʿUthmān had a standard consonantal text copied, sent to the main garrison cities and ordered rival versions destroyed.
