With the court in exile on Ganghwa Island during the Mongol invasions, Goryeo had the entire Buddhist canon carved on some 80,000 woodblocks between 1237 and about 1251, replacing an earlier set the invaders had destroyed and appealing to the Buddha's protection. Prized for its accuracy, the set has been kept at Haeinsa since the end of the 14th century in halls designed to keep the blocks dry.
