In Konya the Persian poet Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī, heir to a Sufi tradition already centuries old, composed the Masnavi, a vast poem on the soul's longing for God. After his death in 1273 his followers were organised as the Mevlevi order, whose whirling samāʿ ceremony is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list.
