Having united the island, King Parākramabāhu I gathered the monks, expelled those he judged unworthy and merged Sri Lanka's three rival fraternities under the Mahāvihāra. The chronicle says he blended the Order like milk and water. Monks from Burma, Thailand and elsewhere on the mainland sought ordination in this reformed line, which became the ancestor of Southeast Asian Theravāda.
