In colonial Burma the monk Ledi Sayadaw urged ordinary laypeople to practise insight meditation, long a specialist monastic pursuit. Twentieth-century Burmese teachers such as Mahāsi Sayadaw and U Ba Khin simplified the methods, their pupils carried them to India and the West, and in 1979 Jon Kabat-Zinn created the secular eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction course at a Massachusetts hospital.
