The Gathas, seventeen hymns in Old Avestan, are traditionally the work of Zarathustra, a priest-poet who taught that Ahura Mazda, the Wise Lord, is the source of all good and that each person must choose between truth and the lie. When he lived is disputed, and some scholars doubt that the hymns are the work of a single historical teacher. Later Avestan texts developed his ideas into a full account of judgement, heaven and hell, and a future saviour.
