Spanish officials had flogged Po'pay of Ohkay Owingeh and other Pueblo religious leaders as sorcerers and hanged some of them. On 10 August 1680 Pueblo warriors led by Po'pay rose together, killed hundreds of colonists and friars, and drove the Spanish south to El Paso. Spain did not return until 1692.
