Machu Picchu was a royal estate of the Inca ruler Pachacuti, built high in the Andes in the 15th century. Inca religion reached far beyond the sun god Inti: it honoured the creator Viracocha and many huacas, sacred places and objects, around Cusco and across the empire. The chief temple was the Coricancha, the Temple of the Sun, in Cusco; after the conquest the Spanish built their churches over the Inca temples.
