A monk from the Silk Road city of Kucha, captured by a Chinese army and held for years in the north-west, was brought to Chang'an in 401 (some sources say early 402), where the ruler Yao Xing put him at the head of a large state-backed translation team. His Chinese versions of the Lotus, Diamond, Vimalakīrti and Amitābha sūtras became the standard ones in East Asia.
