Dona Beatriz Kimpa Vita, a young Kongolese woman, said that Saint Anthony possessed her. She preached a Kongolese Christianity, led her followers to reoccupy the abandoned capital, and called for peace after decades of civil war. In 1706 she was tried as a heretic at King Pedro IV's court, with the backing of the Capuchin missionaries, and burned at the stake.
