On 1 January 1889 the Paiute prophet Wovoka (Jack Wilson) had a vision of renewal through a round dance, and the movement spread across the Plains. On 29 December 1890 the US Seventh Cavalry killed an estimated 150–300 Lakota men, women and children at Wounded Knee Creek. The dance did not die there: Caddo, Pawnee, Kiowa and other nations kept it into the twentieth century.

People: Wovoka
