The moment

Ferdinand and Isabella ordered every Jew in their kingdoms to accept baptism or leave, on the grounds that Jews were drawing converts back to Judaism. Tens of thousands crossed into Portugal, and others sailed to North Africa, Italy and the Ottoman Empire, where their descendants became known as the Sephardim. Among the converso-born exiles of the next generation was Doña Gracia Nasi, a banker and philanthropist who became a leading patron of Jewish life in the Ottoman Empire.
