Aramaic papyri from a Judean garrison on an island in the Nile record a community with its own temple of Yahu, where sacrifices were offered, and whose members also gave to other deities. After the temple was destroyed in 410 BCE, the community wrote to the governor of Judah for leave to rebuild it. The papers of Mibtahiah, a woman who owned houses, married an Egyptian and held the right to divorce, give a rare picture of ordinary Jewish life in the fifth century BCE.

People: Mibtahiah
