Expelled from Geneva in 1538, John Calvin returned in September 1541, and the city's councils adopted his Ecclesiastical Ordinances, which organised the church under pastors, teachers, elders and deacons and set up a Consistory of pastors and elders to enforce discipline. Refugees flocked to the city, its magistrates burned Michael Servetus for heresy in 1553 with Calvin's support, and in 1559 an Academy was founded to train pastors. Calvin's Institutes became the standard theology of the Reformed churches.
