People have lived in Arnhem Land for about 65,000 years, and a painted rock that fell from the ceiling of the Nawarla Gabarnmang shelter shows they were painting there some 28,000 years ago. Kakadu holds some 5,000 recorded rock art sites, with paintings made over many thousands of years, of ancestral beings such as the Rainbow Serpent, whose journeys shaped the land. The tradition never ended: in 1963–64 the Badmardi artist Nayombolmi painted the figures of the Anbangbang gallery at Burrungkuy (Nourlangie).
