The story behind the day
Saga Dawa Düchen is the fifteenth day, the full moon, of Saga Dawa, which is the fourth month in the Tibetan lunar year. Tibetans remember on it the birth, enlightenment and parinirvana of Shakyamuni Buddha, and count it among the four great holy days of their year. In this it is the Tibetan counterpart of Vesak. The whole month is a time for gathering merit, with prayer, scriptural study and the eight Mahāyāna precepts. In 2026 the day fell on 31 May.[1–8]
Origins
Tibetan teachers list four great holy days, each tied to a deed of the Buddha. Chokhor Düchen, on day four of the sixth month, marks his first teaching, and Lhabab Düchen on the twenty-second day of the ninth month marks his return from the heaven where he had taught his mother. The Fifteen Days of Miracles in the first month recall the occasion when he showed miraculous powers to subdue six rival teachers. The fourth, Saga Dawa Düchen, is the day on which Tibetans today remember the great events of his birth, enlightenment and parinirvana.[2–3, 9–10]
What it marks
Tibetan sources agree on the date but not always on the list of events. The Tibetan Nuns Project and FPMT name all three: the birth, the enlightenment and the parinirvana. The Dalai Lama's 2023 teaching on the day spoke of the birth and enlightenment, and a 2021 statement of the Kashag, the Tibetan cabinet in exile, named the enlightenment and parinirvana. Himalayan Art Resources, in its list of the four great celebrations, puts the birth on the seventh day of the same month and the enlightenment and parinirvana on the fifteenth, and an older Tibetan scheme described in the Encyclopedia of Religion spread the events across several months.[2, 11]
How it is kept

Tibetans call Saga Dawa the month of merit. Tibetans believe that the merit of one's actions is multiplied through the month and hugely increased on the fifteenth day. The Kashag describes the month as a time for studying Buddhist texts, meditating and receiving teachings from revered lamas, and nunneries in exile give days to reading scripture aloud. Many lay and monastic Buddhists take the eight Mahāyāna precepts for twenty-four hours, a one-day vow of restraint.[5–7]
Across traditions
Saga Dawa Düchen is the Tibetan counterpart of Vesak: like the Theravāda observance, most Tibetan sources today gather the Buddha's birth, awakening and death on one full-moon day. The first sermon, which Theravāda Buddhists in Sri Lanka remember at Esala Poya, is kept separately in Tibet as Chokhor Düchen.[4, 9, 12]
