Josiah Akindayomi, a prophet of the Cherubim and Seraphim, one of Nigeria's Aladura churches, led a prayer fellowship in Lagos that became the Redeemed Christian Church of God in 1952. When he died in 1980 it had about forty parishes. His successor Enoch Adeboye, a university mathematics lecturer, took over in January 1981; under him the church took on Pentecostal teaching and practice, and in 1983 bought land on the Lagos–Ibadan expressway for the Redemption Camp, where it holds its monthly all-night Holy Ghost Service. By 2004 it reported congregations in more than ninety countries.
